Letter from the Auxiliary

Greetings Fellow Auxiliary Members,

It’s hard to believe the end of the year is just around the corner. That means it won’t be long before we’ll be gathering at the Drury Plaza Broadview Hotel in Wichita for the Winter Convention. Mark your calendars and start planning now to attend January 22-25, 2015. Be sure you include the Auxiliary Luncheon and Fun Auction in your plans. Remember, it’s a separate item on the registration form. Plan to bring an item to auction at the Fun Auction so you can participate in providing the funds for the scholarships that will be given to some worthy students.

Also, be thinking if you know of some deserving auxiliary member that you might want to nominate for the Auxiliary Hall of Fame award. Last year was the first year that we awarded our very own Auxiliary Hall of Fame Award.

The dues billings for next year’s membership dues will be going out soon to all the auctioneers. Be watching for them because the dues billings for auxiliary members will be included on the auctioneers’ bills this year. Don’t be dropped from the membership because you missed paying your dues. After all, it’s a real bargain at only $10.00 per year.

If you have an interest in serving on the Auxiliary Board, be sure to contact one of the Board members. We would love for you to get involved.

The convention is a good opportunity for some great educational meetings and fellowship with other auction families. Hope to see you in Wichita in January.

Annette McCurdy
KAAA President

November presidential update

Megan McCurdyHello Kansas Auctioneer Friends,

Wow, how this year has flown by. It’s hard to believe the holidays are coming and soon I’ll be finishing up my year of presidency. It’s been a great ride and I am so thankful to be having this experience and be working with an incredible Board of Directors.

Just last week, we conducted a board meeting and our Annual Livestock Auctioneer Championship. It was a fierce competition. Congratulations to Russele Sleep, our new champion. We had 12 contestants and the contest was conducted at the Emporia Livestock Auction. This committee included Wayne Wischropp, Charly Cummings, Justin Banzhaf and Mike Bailey. These men did a great job and represented our association well.

I am excited to announce to the membership that not only are we completely in compliance with our state and federal taxes, but we also recently received the news that the KAA officially has our non-profit status current and active. Last year we encountered some issues regarding our status and taxes due to reporting changes and have been working tirelessly to come in compliance ever since. We now look to the future as we are in good standing and a strong association. Our membership is climbing, our value in membership is growing, our financials are strong and it’s a great time to be a member of the Kansas Auctioneers Association. I would like to thank Cindi for embracing this challenge as she joined our association and guided us through it.

We are currently gearing up for Winter Convention, it is right around the corner. It will be held January 22nd-25th at the Drury Broadview Plaza in Wichita. This historic hotel has been recently renovated and has gorgeous views of the river. We are excited to have Paul C. Behr, CAI, BAS (Past NAA President and Past IAC Champion), Christie King, CAI, AARE, BAS (Past NAA President) and Mike Brandly, CAI. We plan to have sessions on auction law, benefit auctions, competitive auctioneering and many other topics for our wide variety of auction professionals. Please review the schedule which is also in this edition of the Sunflower. I’m confident there is something for everyone. Register early for the early bird special!

Also at the Winter Convention will be the preliminary round for the Kansas Auctioneer Championship and a Rookie Bid-Calling contest. Challenge yourself to enter. It’s a challenge for personal improvement and has side benefits of comradery with contestants and a great time. I’m looking forward to seeing some of the outstanding auctioneer talent that we have here in Kansas.

I hope to see you all in Wichita this coming January. I am available at any time to members with questions or concerns and am honored to serve this year as your President.

What does the KAA offer me as a member?

What does the KAA offer me as a member? And why should we encourage auctioneer friends who are not members to join our association? Let’s take a look at these questions and make sure we are getting the full value of what we have available as members of the KAA.

As a member of the Kansas Auctioneers Association, we have many resources at our fingertips. One very important, and often overlooked, benefit is our ability to request UCC lien searches. We can obtain these for a charge of only $10 for search plus $1 per page should the search find any outstanding liens. This could be the best $10 we ever spend if it helps us avoid a problem. We need to know about any outstanding lienholders that must be paid off at time of settlement from the auction proceeds. It is very simple to request a UCC search. Just email Cindi Ferguson at [email protected] and let her know what company or individual you are running a search on. Cindi will have you provide her any details you need.

Are you following the KAA on Facebook? Stay connected with current happenings within the association by liking our Kansas Auctioneers Association Facebook page. You will very quickly come to appreciate the posts that keep us current within the Association.

The Promotion Committee has been working diligently with Facebook ads to bring more potential buyers and sellers to the auction calendar on our website – increasing the visibility of your auctions.

Are you taking advantage of the education offered at conventions? We offer real estate CE courses, as well as, auction education relevant to you and your business.

Networking is also a huge benefit of this Association, as we all know. It is nice to know KAA members from around the state who we can refer auctions to when we receive calls regarding auctions out of our area. Our customers appreciate the customer service when we can recommend a fellow member of our Association to help them out.

One very important job of us, as KAA members, is to take time and welcome new members to our Association. We are all busy and have every day jam packed with things to get done, but taking that five minutes to make a phone call or send an email to a new member makes a huge impact on that new auctioneer. We have all been the new person to the auction industry and know the struggles of getting started, so please join us in making a point to welcome new members when they join. These names will be in the Sunflower, as well as, on the KAA Facebook page. The past couple years we have been blessed with new members joining, so let’s not forget about them. They are the future of this great Association.

We are all very blessed to be a part of this great industry of auctioneering, so be sure you become a member of the KAA today!
