Regional meetings

Each year, the KAA holds a series of regional meetings in different parts of Kansas. These meetings are informal gatherings of both KAA member auctioneers as well as auctioneers who aren’t yet or are no longer KAA members.

This year’s meeting schedule has been finalized and our first meeting is next week. All meetings start at 6:30 p.m.

  • Thursday, October 20, in Lawrence
Perkins Family Restaurant at 1711 West 23rd Street
  • Tuesday, November 1, in Pratt
Playa Azul on Highway 54 at 1413 E 1st Street
  • Tuesday, November 15, in WaKeeney
Western Kansas Saloon and Grill at 121 N Main Street
  • Tuesday, November 29, in Concordia
    Kristy’s Family Restaurant at 101 W 6th Street

If you’re an auctioneer – member or not – and would like to come for a free meal and good discussion with other auctioneers about the industry and the association, please consider attending one or more of the meetings. All we ask is that you drop us a line and let us know you’re coming. You can do this by submitting the feedback form or sending me an email to [email protected].

Shawn Terrel wins 2011 Kansas Auctioneer Championship

2011 KAA Auctioneer Champion Shawn Terrel

Shawn Terrel won the 20th annual Kansas Auctioneers Association Auctioneer Championship on Wednesday at Bretz Law Arena. Shawn is the vice president of United Country Auction Services in Kansas City and a long-time member of the KAA.

Held every year at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson, Kan., the Kansas Auctioneer Championship showcases the best auctioneers in the KAA who each vie for the title. From livestock and auto auctioneers to real estate and benefit auctioneers, each auctioneer competes against fellow professionals. The auctioneers are judged by a panel of three judges through a round of interviews and then the preliminary and final bid calling portions. Contestants are judged by presentation, chant and voice, effective auctioneering skills and the ability to make an ambassador for the Kansas Auctioneers Association.

This year’s competition featured 14 contestants from three states.

KAA’s Megan McCurdy First Runner Up at IAC

More than 80 auctioneers from as far away as Cork City, Ireland, competed on July 15 in the 23rd International Auctioneer Championship (IAC) competition. Established in 1988, the annual IAC competition is the most competitive bid calling contest for auctioneers and IAC champions are considered to be the world’s top bid calling auctioneers. Sponsored by the National Auctioneers Association, this year’s competition took place at the 62ndInternational Auctioneers Conference and Show in Orlando, Fla.

The current Kansas Champion Auctioneer is Megan McCurdy, CAI, BAS, of Wichita, who represented Kansas and the KAA in the IAC. She placed second in the competition behind Camille Booker of Kennewick, Washington.

KAA’s Kevin Borger won the IAC in 2009, and Megan’s strong showing in 2011 underscores the fact that Kansas has some of the best bid callers in the world. Congratulations Megan!
